Why do people drink when they are depressed?

Ironically, alcohol is a depressant. However:

* Alcohol also relaxes you, in moderation, and depressed people can be otherwise very tense. * It also serves to narrow the drinker's focus to avoid thinking of problem areas in his/her life. * Drinkers will drink and then come up with the rationale after the desire presents itself.
