Pre-operative services are performed by a variety of medical professionals, in conjunction with each other. Most surgeons create standing orders and protocols exist concerning day-before and day-of surgery measures. X-Ray or other technicians may need to take new films, as appropriate for a surgery. Pre-op blood work is required on all patients as are certain medications in some situations, such as bowel cleansing for certain procedures. Nurses perform both nursing pre-op measures as well as carry out physician's/surgeon's pre-op orders. Pre-op sedation medications are either obtained from standing orders or the surgeon may write specific orders for that patient.
