When You Are 13 Or Younger . . .

You can deliver newspapers.

You can work as a baby-sitter.

You can work as an actor or performer in motion pictures, television, theater or radio.

You can work in a business solely owned or operated by your parents.

You can work on a farm owned or operated by your parents.

However, parents are prohibited from employing their children in manufacturing, mining, or any other occupation declared hazardous (listed below) by the Secretary of Labor.

When You Turn 14 . . . You also can work in an:

* office, * grocery store, * retail store, * restaurant, * movie theater, * Baseball park, * amusement park, or * gasoline service station. You generally may not work in:

* communications or public utilities jobs, * construction or repair jobs, * driving a motor vehicle or helping a driver, * manufacturing and mining occupations, * power-driven machinery or hoisting apparatus other than typical office machines, * processing occupations, * public messenger jobs, * transporting of persons or property, * workrooms where products are manufactured, mined or processed, or * warehousing and storage. In addition, you may not work any other job or occupation declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor.

* Mow lawns, I started mowing lawns when I was 11 or 12 let me tell you I hated it. However, I was able to buy new dirt bikes every year until I was out of school and an adult. I am now a landscape contractor with 20 employees, 10 trucks, 3 tractors, a home a 2005 911 Porsche all from cutting grass. One bit of advice buy a Honda mower 216hx commercial type cost approx $1200, a good blower and weed whacker and learn Spanish. Do your parents give you an allowance for doing chores around the house? Ask your mom or dad if they can suggest some chores like washing the dishes or taking out the trash that they would pay you for. But don't expect too much at first.

* Also, try babysitting. I would suggest starting with your younger siblings or close neighbors/family friends. Take a babysitting course with the Red Cross or SafeSitter (at your local hospital). Then advertise your abilities through business cards, your parents and friends, and whatever else your parents suggest. Remember to follow any rules they have set, including who you can babysit for and how long. Babysitting is not just for girls. A woman with only sons and no daughters might prefer a male babysitter.

* You could also do yard work with your dad or another older man. I know of several guys who cut grass and trim hedges and make a lot of money. Ask your parents if this would be something you could participate in. * I've included a few suggestions above, but ask your mom or dad, teacher, or older sibling for some more. Teenagers can make money. You just have to know how to do it. * Baby sitting, yard work, newspaper route, mow lawns around your town, Clean dog poop from peoples yard, detail peoples cars, go around during snow storms and shovel drive ways, deliver your local newspaper, run errands for the elderly, * A 14-year-old can always make money by selling old items, babysitting, pet-siting, or by doing simple chores. it will not seem like a lot of money, but it adds up! :)
