What is a tidewater plantation?

The earliest planters of the Southern Colonies settled along rivers and creeks of the coastal plain. Because the land was washed by ocean tides, the region was known as the Tidewater. The Tidewater's gentle slopes and rivers offered rich farmland for plantation.
