Humanitarian aid, in its modern form, began to be organized in the mid-19th century, particularly with the establishment of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1863. This was a response to the suffering caused by wars and conflicts, particularly following the Battle of Solferino in 1859. The concept has evolved over time, but its roots are firmly planted in the desire to alleviate human suffering in times of crisis.
