What makes LEDs more robust than other light sources?

LED's are made of solid clear plastic, encasing a junction of two semiconducting materials. Whereas most previous light sources involved delicate, glass, envelopes, enclosing either a hot wire or a vacuum of some sort.
LED's do not get hot and so last a lot longer.
