What is a sudden military attack called?

A sudden attack is known either as a 'surprise attack' or an 'ambush.' Although both are unexpected, a surprise attack is typically a land offensive (the German Offensive @ Battle of the Bulge), whereas in an ambush a patrol or unit is fired on by defenders in a concealed position.
