How does a puffer fish mate?

The exact breeding habits differ from species to species, but puffers are extremely hard to breed and very few people have ever had success. Usually the female lays her eggs on a slate stone, or in a sand bed. The male will fan them with his tail, gently rotating them until they hatch (how long this takes varies by species).
