Madagascar was not a communist country, but it did experience periods of socialist governance. After gaining independence from France in 1960, the country was led by President Philibert Tsiranana, who favored a capitalist approach. However, in 1972, a socialist revolution led by Didier Ratsiraka established a Marxist-Leninist regime, which lasted until the late 1990s. The government implemented socialist policies, but Madagascar never fully embraced a communist system as seen in other nations.
