First, a story: in the early days of radio, there was no way to record a program. If you heard something you liked, you could only listen to it live, as it was happening. It wasn't until the 1940s that new technology made it easier to record something on the radio, and that new technology was called "audio tape" (audio, because it referred to something you could hear, or listen to). Years after that, when television became popular, video tape was invented. Now, for the sentence: When I first became a disc jockey back in the late 1960s, I would record my shows on audio tape so I could listen back to them later and think of ways to improve my on-air work.
