When did they start building a moat?

The construction of moats dates back to ancient times, with some of the earliest examples appearing around 3000 BCE in Mesopotamia and Egypt, where they were used for defense. However, the extensive use of moats around castles became prominent during the medieval period, particularly from the 9th century onward in Europe. These water-filled ditches were designed to enhance fortifications and protect against invaders.
