Thomas Hezikiah ka Tom Mix [January 6, 1880-October 12, 1940] may have made as many as 336 films between 1910 and 1935. He made a successful transition from silent films, to talking movies. For his last nine films were talkies. As a film star, Mix was considered the king of the cowboys. For he set the standard upon which all heroic cowboy roles and all Western action plots were modeled. It was a standard that drew upon distinct costumes and stunt riding. So key to the movie was the role of the horse. And Mix's films particularly benefited from the participation of three favorites: Old Blue, until 1919; Tony the Wonder Horse, until 1929; and Tony Jr. the Miracle Horse, until 1935. Tony the Wonder Horse first appeared in The Heart of Texas, in 1917. As Mix's main horse from 1919-1929, Tony became most popular with audiences, who sent him weekly fan mail. He even starred in films that focused on his popularity by titles such as Just Tony, in 1922. For the films showed him not just responding to typical commands such as 'Whoa', but also reacting to more complex missions in whole sentences. And they showed his skills as a stunthorse. Tony actually retired from films in 1929. But the news wasn't official, or made public, until 1932. By that time, successor Tony Jr., who wasn't an equine relative, already taken his place. Tony the Wonder Horse was put down, at the ripe old horse age of 32, on October 10, 1942.
