I had to walk one half mile in 15 mins because I was going to miss my connecting plane if I didn't. I did not make it. I have ostroartistis and had just had a cortosone shot on my left knee how fast?

Make sure you "crack" your knees because you feel better having done it... NOT because they "normally" crack when you squat or kneel... These are two different symptoms...

Feeling like you NEED to crack your knees because it makes them feel better --as long as there is no pain, swelling, or stiffness from arthritis...

No painful symptoms? = no damage to the joint...

Answer

There is no medical reason a person feels the need to "crack their knees"... ie, nothing anatomically positive is achieved by doing so. It's probably more psychologically gratifying...

Kinda like cracking your knuckles... or your back (I did this when I was a lot younger and I always thought I felt better after having done so!)

The "cracking" sound is the release of a bubble nitrogen within the joint when a great-enough vacuum is produced by bending the joint far enough... however, no real benefit is obtained by doing so...
