What was Lucifer's position in heaven?

A:The classical Christian view is that the first beings created by God were the angels, enormously powerful and intelligent creatures, to whom God gave free will. Directly after their creation, the angels used their free will to make a moral choice. Most of them chose to love God, but some chose to put their own wills in place of God's. These sinful angels were cast out of heaven, Lucifer among them.

Lucifer appears once in the Old Testament at Isaiah chapter 14, but not in the form most Christians expect. This passage refers to the king of Babylon, who laid the nations low. It talks of his pomp and splendour, how he had ruled the nations in anger, and his fate after his overthrow by the king of Persia. He had compared himself to the Morning Star (and was thus derisorily called 'Lucifer' - lucem ferre, which mean "light-bearer", a name for the dawn appearance of the planet Venus) and had thought that he would ascend into heaven and sit among the stars, but was now himself persecuted. Christian scholars misunderstood this text and assumed that it referred to the devil.

The earliest Christian text that equates Lucifer with Satan is Against Marcion (2.10), by Tertullian, but medieval folklore and literature sometimes said that character Lucifer is prince of hell and Satan is only his henchman. One of the earliest Christian traditions is that Lucifer and/or Satan was the head of the heavenly choir.
