Purpose: Luke intended to write an orderly account of Jesus and the early disciples for a person named Theophilus. He keeps his eye on describing things for gentile readers.
Sources: Luke did not personally follow Jesus during His earthly ministry. History and tradition tell us that Luke got his information from disciples and Mary the mother of Jesus.
Luke's background: Luke was a physician and accompanied Paul on missionary journeys. (Colossians 4:14).
