Who pays PGA golf tournament purses?

The winner gets 18% of the total purse, then the rest is dispersed on a sliding scale based on the total purse and the finishing position of the player. Ties are a different story. Let's say that three players tie for second. The total prize money for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place is added together, then divided equally amongst those three players. This is why finishing in a solo place pays more than finishing in a tie.
