Why do old fashion bikes have one big wheel and one small?

That "old fashion" bike from the late 1800's also known as a "penny farthing" or "bone shaker" was a design that didn't work very well. It was hard to ride and steer and uncomfortable. Not all "old fashion" bikes were built that way.
