Cristoforo Colombo (Christopher Columbus) was given 3 ships by the King of Aragon and the Queen of Castille in 1492. They were a carrack called La Gallega ('The Galician'), which Colombo renamed to Santa María ('Saint Mary'), a caravel called Santa Clara ('Saint Clare'), which was nicknamed La Niña ('The Girl'), and another caravel whose proper name is unknown, but was nicknamed La Pinta ('The Painted One').
