What was newgate prison known for?

it was a particularly grim prison, where frequently those incarcerated would die from disease, maltreatment or malnutrition before the end of their sentences. Some of the worst offenders from London were kept there, and executions were a daily occurrence (assuming the prisoner survived long enough to be hanged)
