Was there potential for false accusation for witchcraft?

In earlier times many women, and in some cases men, were triled and convicted of witchcraft. The same old story, they were burned at the stake and buried under a oak tree to prevent their evil from spreading.

Today you do hear of people being convicted, especially in African countries. These people are normally traditional healers, and some of their practices involve sacrifices and murder.
