In a democracy what are those who rule responsible to do?

Within a democracy, those who are elected to rule are responsible to the people who elected him or her to that position. The ultimate responsibility of the leader, therefore, is to keep promises made to the electorate, and dedicate his or her term of office to working for the benefits and rights of their constituents.
