Vietnam, was not a political battle. It was a military struggle between two groups with different economic philiOSophies, Capitalism, and Communism. Of course the US involved itself to help the Capitalist party.

One of the things that often accompanies communism, is Dictatorship, which was the US' official reason for entering, to support the party with the right to vote, but it was actually a show of power against Russia and China. The US feared, what President Eisenhower called the domino effect, or that if one country became communist, many would follow, and thus, the US intervened in many countries to try and stop this from occurring.
