This is a fairly common problem with many modern cars. It usually happens from a sticky drink or other liquid being spilled over the shifter area (cafe mocha, etc.). There is a solenoid in the shifter assembly that unlocks the park button when you step on the brake pedal, and it gets gummed up from whatever was spilled down there. Occasionally, when you take it apart and get to the solenoid, you can spray penetrating fluid into it, and free it up. Most of the time, though, the solenoid will need to be replaced with a new one from the dealer, or a used one from a salvage yard.
