Why should you separate the Non vegetarian and vegetarian food?

Vegetarians aren't big fans of their food being covered in meat. I was once given a plate of veggie spring rolls which they had put on the same plate as my brother's prime ribs. Surprisingly they were no longer vegetarian after being covered in some form of meaty BBQ sauce.
