As electrons pass through the electron transport chain associated with photosystem II, they lose energy, which is used to actively transport protons (H⁺ ions) from the stroma into the thylakoid lumen. This creates a proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane. The stored potential energy in this gradient is then utilized by ATP synthase to produce ATP during photophosphorylation. Additionally, the energy lost by the electrons contributes to the reduction of NADP⁺ to NADPH in subsequent steps of photosynthesis.
