How did slaves intetain themselves when they were free?

After emancipation, former slaves often engaged in various forms of socializing and community-building, such as holding communal gatherings, singing spirituals, dancing, and storytelling. They also participated in church services, formed mutual aid societies, and celebrated holidays and special occasions.
