Where must the moon be to be half lit?

Two possible answers:

1) The moon is always half lit. However, as it moves around Earth, we are exposed to more or less of the lit hemisphere. (ignoring lunar eclipses)

2) In order for us to see a "half moon" (1st or last quarter), it must be 90 degrees from the sun in the sky.
