How many coats of paint should you put on the exterior of a house?

Two coats are always better than one inside or out. The paint job will last much longer and look better because you will not have the old color bleeding through.I have had to put as many as three coats of white on a house but rarely if a good quality paint is used. One is only good enough if you plan on moving in the near future and you using the same color.
