Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry fought the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813, successfully defeating a Royal Navy task force.

Some of the most famous Navy quotes came from Perry during this battle:

"If a victory is to be gained, I will gain it" (at the outset of the battle)

"We have met the enemy and they are ours" (message sent after the victory, the full message being "We have met the enemy and they are ours: "We have met the enemy and they are ours; two ships, two brigs, one schooner and one sloop")
