Why do the Dashboard lights stay on after the key is removed from a 2002 volkswagen jetta?

Have not tried any trouble shooting other than making sure the car would start. Backed it out of the garage & drove a few feet before parking again in driveway. Have not driven further than that since Wed PM & I am fairly sure that all lights turned off when I parked it then. Just noticed that they were on last night.
