Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan city located in the Andes Mountains of Peru, believed to have been built in the 15th century. It was brought to international attention in 1911 by American historian Hiram Bingham, although local indigenous people knew of its existence long before. Its remote location, dense vegetation, and the fact that it was largely forgotten by the outside world contributed to the long period before its rediscovery. The site remained hidden from widespread knowledge for centuries, shrouded in mist and accessible only through challenging terrain.
