The scale of the map.

It is expressed as a ratio (e.g. 1:10,000) and usually gives the actual distance represented by a centimeter or an inch on the map (e.g. 1 inch = 50 miles).

There may be a bar scale that can be used as a measurement reference, especially if no ruler is available to measure.
