How is Amazonia being directly destroyed by humans?

They do have a reason for that. Humans are not evil or cruel, hovever some are but i hope not every one. The reason is to do that is simple, we need the wood that the Amazon jungle provides to us. They don't destroy it for a purpoise it is a "colletoral damage" of the deforesting. Hope It helped!
