Southeastern Ohio, from the far east suburbs of Columbus all the way east to Zanesville and farther. Area code 740 includes Ashville, Athens, Bainbridge, Baltimore, Cambridge, Carroll, Chillicothe, Condit, Delaware, Heath, Jackson, Jelloway, Johnstown, Knockemstiff, Lancaster, London, Marietta, Marion, Mt. Sterling, Mt. Vernon, Nevada, Newark, Pleasant View, Portsmouth, Rathbone, St. Clairsville, Steubenville, Sunbury, Uhrichsville, and Washington Court House.

Effective April 22, 2015, area code 220 will be added as an overlay on area code 740, serving the same communities. Existing telephone numbers in area code 740 will not change; however, you will have to dial the area code on all calls to, from, or within the 740/220 area.

In the U.S., 740 is an area of Ohio that separated from Area 614 in December 1997. It almost surrounds the current 614 area and covers the area between Columbus and the West Virginia border.
