Ferdinand Magellan led the expedition that ultimately circumnavigated the globe. He set sail from Spain in 1519 with a fleet of five ships, seeking a westward route to the Spice Islands. Although Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines in 1521, his fleet, under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, completed the journey back to Spain in 1522, successfully proving the possibility of global circumnavigation.
