What was the distinction made between a knight breaking an oath to his overlord and tricking people to whom he had made no pledge?

Knights were not allowed to break their Word to their overlord (if he did, he was charged with "treason" for betraying the order of knighthood) but were allowed to deceive others to whom they had sworn no loyalty.
