Coumaden and dicumarol are anticoagulant compounds that inhibit vitamin K epoxide reductase, leading to decreased synthesis of clotting factors dependent on vitamin K. Dicumarol was the first oral anticoagulant discovered and is derived from sweet clover. Coumaden is a synthetic derivative of dicumarol and is used in similar therapeutic applications. Both compounds are important in the management of thromboembolic disorders but are less commonly used today compared to newer anticoagulants.
