How does a music artist make a song?

A band/ singer/ songwriter/ music artist composes a song by combining lyrics and music together to produce a harmony of the two. The lyrics may come from real life experiences like heartbreaks, falling in love, fights, or world wide events. The music is usually influenced by the lyrics, such as if the lyrics were speaking of beign angry, the music might be loud, while a sad song may have slow, solemn music.

Yes; well, more traditionally, in more cases than not, a musician takes the lyrics of a text or poem that already exists, gets a 'feel' for it, and comes up with melody and support chords and harmonies that seem to fit the text as it flows.

Occasionally, people love a piece of music, as in the composition of Bach-Gounod's, Ave Maria (Bach's 'Prelude in C' was already long-existent), or an arrangement of chords or broken chords, and place melody line and Words over the top of it.

Two of my children (13 and 20) developed a beautiful Mother's Day song in this manner and sang it Mother's day programme in Church.

Occasionally, if 2 or 3 people are working together, the idea for music and lyrics can come together over sets of brief passages of the song - depending on what they are trying to achieve both lyrically and musically from the piece. Other times, ideas of distinctly different kinds are played around with and modified, until they can be sufficientlyly modified and engineered into one piece. Another of my sons has used these latter approaches for professional recordings. In fact, I believe he and his co-writer have used all of these different methods at one time or another.
