What does it mean when one is told to wear 'Sunday best' attire?

Traditionally, one's best clothing was reserved for church attendance on Sunday. The practice no longer holds, but the term continues to this day. In modern parlance, Sunday best typically means to dress semi-formally: a dress/skirt for women and shirt/tie (sometimes jacket) for men.
