Burning plastic smell when air conditioner is on?

Happening to us, too, with a brand new GE room air conditioner, 5000BTU. Plastic smell is mentioned in the appliance brochure which says the smell can last 2 weeks. But I was worried about toxic fumes so I called GE. The woman told me the smell should last only a couple of hours and that I should take it back.

So now we have to take it out of the window, hump it 40 minutes to the store, get another one, hump it home, install it and see if this one is any better. If not, we have to repeat the process. That's GE customer service?! Also, very noisy. I'm looking elsewhere.
