What are the disadvantages of elongated states?

The size and shape of the state, being shaped as a strip, makes distances an obstacle. It can present divisions between ethnic groups since people do trading and move across borders. Elongated states can suffer poor internal communications. Last, a region located at an extreme end of the elongation might be isolated from the capital, which is usually placed near the center.
