In the 20th century, African Americans pursued higher education through a combination of established historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and increased access to predominantly white institutions, particularly after the Civil Rights Movement. Despite facing systemic racism and significant barriers, many sought educational opportunities to advance their social and economic status. Activism and legal challenges, such as Brown v. Board of Education, played crucial roles in dismantling segregation and promoting access to higher education. Scholarships, community support, and federal programs also emerged to assist African American students in overcoming financial obstacles.
