Diamonds are formed from carbon under extreme pressure and temperature conditions deep within the Earth's mantle, typically around 150 to 250 kilometers (93 to 155 miles) beneath the surface. They are brought to the surface through volcanic eruptions in a type of rock called kimberlite. The natural processes that create diamonds can take millions to billions of years.
