What is the blackmouth society?

The Blackmouth Society was a division of several American Indian tribes (I know for certain in the Hidatsa and Mandan, perhaps in others) in the 1800's that functioned as police/authority unit. Membership in this society was seen as a mark of individual distinguishment.
