Not many people believe people pray or can pray while asleep. In some cultures and religions, however, dreams have a very high significance and can be interpreted as contact with a spirit world or the divine. Because the mind is somewhat conscious as people dream, this could be interpreted as communicating with the spirit world or the divine - which is what can be defined as prayer.
If you meant why people pray before they go to bed, there can be different reasons for that. People often ask their Deity to watch over them and possibly people that are on their mind during the night. Another reason is that the moment before bed is a moment of relative calm and evaluation of the day past and ahead, where people like to include their spiritual needs.
After the first stages of sleep, your mind doesn't really work in a way which allows you to have a coherent conversation with anyone, you're basically on stand-by and therefore I don't think it's possible to pray while fast asleep. I beg to differ with you,but i have said coherent and specific prayers while asleep. Call it what you will but i clearly remember praying for deliverance from evil more than once in my life, while sound asleep. My spouse at the time said i was talking in my sleep, but in a language she didn't understand.
