How did barangay came to be?

The barangay system in the Philippines originated during pre-colonial times as a system of organization where communities were led by a local chief called a datu. When the Spanish colonized the Philippines, they adapted and incorporated the barangay system into their governance structure, appointing leaders called cabeza de barangay to oversee local affairs. Today, barangays serve as the smallest administrative division in the Philippines, with each barangay electing its own officials to govern and provide basic services to its residents.
