When did metical first come into circulation?

The metical was first introduced as Mozambique's official currency on June 16, 1980. It replaced the escudo at a rate of 1 metical for 1,000 escudos. The metical has undergone several changes and redenominations since its introduction, with the most recent one occurring in 2006.
