What can you tell me about sand lot baseball?

The term "Sandlot Baseball" started years ago when children in urban areas would find an empty lot referred to as a "sandlot" to play baseball. It was far more common to find an empty lot with the area not fully developed. It was not an organized league but a group of kids that formed teams, by choosing sides, or playing against other neighborhoods.

Unlike an organized Little League, played on a grassy baseball field, the sandlot got it's name because it was lacking grass. Teams were typically chosen by two team "captains", normally the best two kids. A bat would be tossed from one captain to the other. The other captain would grab the bat with one hand. Then each captain would take turns gripping the bat hand over hand (or sometimes just two fingers in a "V') until the last captain grabbed the top of the knob. He would get first pick to form a team.
