Number one, always let someone know where you are going in case something happens to you, people can locate you quicker and get you help if needed. I like to familiarize myself with the areas I will be going to by looking at the areas on aerial photos and topo maps, this helps greatly. I use Windows Live Maps alot for this purpose.
