This craft covers first the necessary knots, hitches, bends, splices, and whipping that need to be learned to maintain a sailing ship, or even a small sailboat. In addition, most sailor's agree that ornamental ropework is a part of this as well, as sailors often have time to practice this at sea, and many different useful designs can be made.
